Honeymoon Week: St. Lucia

Today we bring you somewhere warm and beautiful, once again. St. Lucia! Emily & Bobby enjoyed their time at a Sandals resort whose motto was “no pressure – no problem!” Ahh, vacation. Enjoy our last installment of our honeymoon series!
The above photo is of my husband, Bobby, and me on our honeymoon in St. Lucia during late-August 2009. The image captures everything I loved about our trip…the sand, the sun, the setting, and having my new husband by my side. We stayed at the Sandals La Toc all-inclusive resort, and enjoyed ourselves immensely. The honeymoon was everything we hoped it would be…relaxing, romantic, and memorable. We actually had so much fun during our time in St. Lucia that we literally lost all track of time, and tried to leave one day early. We weren’t in a hurry to leave…far from it! We just miscalculated. (How, I’ll never know.) We got so far as to pack our things, check out of the resort, and board the shuttle. Thank goodness we looked at the tickets once more before we started the hour-long commute to the airport…good grief.

St. Lucia holds a special place in our hearts, and we would visit again in a heartbeat.

Thanks for sharing, Emily!

Honeymoon Week: California & Mexico

Today we are taking you on another cruising adventure. This time its the coast of California with a fun stop in Mexico. Cynthia & Doug were married in 2007.

For our honeymoon we cruised the pacific ocean, along the coast of California and to Ensenada, Mexico.  The never-ending excitement began as our ship departed from Las Angeles.  With a constant supply of the best food, wonderful entertainment, non-stop action, and the opportunity to see many parts of the world; we instantly fell in love with that form of travel and soon identified ourselves as “cruisers.”

Our first stop was San Diego, CA.  It was our first stop on our first cruise, so we kept it simple and decided to visit the San Diego Zoo.  It was the most amazing zoo we’ve ever seen.  We then spent a day on Catalina Island, just 20 miles off the coast of California.  Catalina Island has a culture all its own.  The island is comprised of the cutest little houses, and residence drove golf carts as their form of transportation.  Space is a commodity there and preserving the environment is top priority.  We snorkeled and then rented a two-seater bike, used to explore the wonderful island. On day three, we headed down to Ensenada, Mexico, one of the larger cities in Mexico.  In the morning, we took a guided, 4-hour tour of Ensenada on a Rhino 4×4.  We were shown the best and worst parts of the city, while learning about Mexican culture from our local tour guide.  It was exciting to see Mexico while jumping sand dunes in our 4×4.  It was the first time either of us had visited another country.  To say the least, our eyes were opened.  We then headed back to port in L.A.  There, we visited a couple beaches, local malls, Hollywood, Universal City Walk, and much more!
We loved our honeymoon and always opt for cruising when it comes time to plan a vacation.  Since that time, we’ve visited 9 islands and 4 countries via ship.  Cruising takes you places and allows you to see the world, with the one you love.

Thanks for sharing, Cynthia!

Honeymoon Week: The Mediterranean

We are thrilled to tell you about our own honeymoon experiences in the beautiful Mediterranean. The Mediterranean has so many places to visit and between our two trips, we got to experience quite a bit of it. First up, a Mediterranean cruise!

Nik and I knew that we wanted to spend our honeymoon exploring together. Knowing how deeply connected I am to my Italian roots, Nik started looking right there – in Italy. We soon discovered that a great way to see Italy and a few other places would be to take a cruise. We started our 12 day cruise from a port right outside of Rome. We stopped in Naples, Sicily, Pisa, Tuscany, Genoa and Venice. We also ventured to Dubrovnik, Croatia and Barcelona, Spain. We spent the majority of our time eating (we love food!) and site seeing in places that now feel so familiar. I wouldn’t trade those two weeks for the world.

My senior year in college I took a tourism class.  My final project was to plan a two week vacation to somewhere unique.  Since I was getting married right after graduation, our honeymoon was my focus.  All the work was done and Jarrod just needed to book it.  We spent two weeks on a tiny island call Malta, which sits right in the middle of the Mediterranean.  Since it does sit in the middle the culture and history is simply amazing.  We spent every single moment soaking up the details of this island’s past.  We had at least one and sometimes two tours a day.  We aimed for adventure with tours of neolithic temples, a glowing blue lagoon, boat trips and even hiked up an active volcano in Sicily.  We ate amazing authentic food and even made time for a siesta each day.  This is one trip we dream of taking again.   We still can’t believe we spent two weeks is the beautiful country of Malta.

Honeymoon Week: Hawaii

We are taking you to beautiful Hawaii for our second post in our Honeymoon series. Sonja & Filip were married in 2008 and are avid travelers. You can view images of their wedding in 417 Bride.

I’ve always enjoyed the opportunity to travel. Both of my parents love road trips and my dad worked for an airline. My husband always spent his vacation time traveling to Springfield to visit family. Luckily, he was hooked on travel after our first vacation together to Yellowstone National Park. Since then we’ve been all over the country, from Boston to San Diego. Our honeymoon was a great opportunity to go beyond the lower 48. We choose Maui: the weather is amazing and it’s the perfect combination of relaxing and adventurous. I love adventure; Filip appreciates a little down time mixed in. We spent hours on Wailea beach, took our convertible up the Road to Hana, braved the Haleakala volcano, snorkeled with a shark and went surfing for the first time. We found the best restaurants on the island and enjoyed fresh fish, Mai Tai’s, sushi, papaya and pineapple. (Can I go back right now?!)

Vacation with Filip will always be my favorite thing! This year we are looking forward to a trip to Niagara  Falls and Maine. I’m very thankful for my husband (and best friend!) who wants to explore the world with me.

Thanks for sharing, Sonja!

Honeymoon Week: Ireland & Jamaica

Welcome to honeymoon week! Whether you are planning your wedding or just itching to get that summer vacation going, we are going to inspire you all. week. long. We are so excited to showcase some of your beautiful travels. A special thanks to all that submitted their story over the last few weeks!

To start the week off, we have an incredibly sweet story for you. Its a little more in depth than just a honeymoon trip. We’d like to introduce you to Christy and her Army Chaplain husband, Erik. Their honeymoon took place in their beloved Ireland.

Ireland has a very special place in our hearts. We fell in love there on a spring break trip in 2005, and decided to return for our honeymoon in the fall of 2006. That November we explored tiny villages, timeless landscapes, and bustling cities on the Emerald Isle. It was a fantastic trip to a magical place that captures the imagination.

This past November, Christy and Erik took a trip to Jamaica.

My husband Erik was deployed to Afghanistan for a year. His mid tour leave was over our four year Anniversary and we celebrated by spending 10 days at Sandals White House in Jamaica. It was the most amazing trip. We had so much fun relaxing on the beach! They brought a little miracle back from their trip. After Erik returned from Afghanistan, the couple announced that they had a bun in the oven. Their first baby is due in August. Congrats to Christy & Erik! Thanks for sharing your travel stories. And a special thank you for serving our country.

Honeymoon Contest Winner!

Thank you to all that participated in our honeymoon contest. Not only did we want to award a yummy prize to The Hot Chocolate, we also wanted to collect an array of inspiring honeymoon ideas from real brides to share with brides-to-be. We were in love with each and every honeymoon spot and story (it made us want to plan a vacation ASAP!). However, we could only have one winner.

And that winner is…..

MELISSA!

Melissa and hubby, Josh, went on a very recent honeymoon to Costa Rica (they are newly-newly weds, as they just married last month!). Melissa might look familiar, because she is a Social Graces’ bride. You’ve already seen her Mad Men wedding shower, and you will be pleased to know that her beautiful wedding will be featured here tomorrow! Here’s what Melissa had to say about their trip:
Josh and I went to the Northern Pacific coastline of Costa Rica for our honeymoon! Costa Rica has untamed, natural beauty—from spectacular bluffs to warm ocean waters below, from white, to brown, to black beaches, from exotic birds, to monkeys, to iguanas–this trip was truly paradise! We were completely impressed with the unspoiled rainforest, farm land, and volcanic fields that created the diverse landscape we saw everyday.  Our honeymoon was a combination of relaxation and adventure! Some days we relished the tropical sun by laying out at the beach or the pool with a tropical drink in hand.  Others, we packed up and headed to the rainforest to zip-line across the forest’s canopy, horseback ride down the bluffs, and rush down a mile long water slide through the woods!  But, my most favorite was our adventures to the mud baths and hot springs–we got to rub mud all over ourselves and then relax in the natural hot springs under a volcano.  We also didn’t miss out on sailing, snorkeling, exploring underwater caves, dolphin spotting and watching the beautiful Costa Rican sunset over the ocean.  I think Social Graces put it well–traveling with the one you love is the best!

Congrats, Melissa, on the recent marriage, gorgeous honeymoon and contest win! We will contact you on how to claim your prize.

Stay tuned for a very special honeymoon blog series next week – featuring other contest entries!

The winner was chosen through Random.org.  A special thanks to Amber at The Hot Chocolate for sponsoring this contest.
